In situ recovery (ISR) is a mining method whereby the ore is left in the ground, and minerals are recovered from it by dissolving them and pumping the mineral-laden solution to the surface.

This results in minimal surface disturbance and no tailings or waste rock. However, the orebody must be permeable to the liquids used, and located so that they do not contaminate groundwater near the orebody.
