TELUS to Spend $1-Billion in Fibre-Optic Internet Expansion in VancouverThe company said on Friday the first Vancouver neighbourhoods to be connected next year will be able to access download speeds of 150 megabits per second. In the coming years, it will offer increasingly higher speeds over its “gigabit-enabled network” as demand increases.


Bell Gigabit Fibe Internet Service Launched in Ontario, QuebecBell launched its Gigabit Fibe service Monday, offering download speeds of up to 940 megabits per second. “That’s fast enough to download a 3 GB HD movie in just 25 seconds,” the company says.

It’s considerably faster than the current top download speeds for major internet service providers in Canada, which top out at 100 to 250 megabits per second. Previously, Bell’s top speed on offer was 175 megabits per second.


Quebecor’s Videotron Buys Fibrenoire for $125-MillionQuebecor Inc. is deepening its commitment to the business market with a $125-million deal to acquireFibrenoire, a fibre-optic connectivity company.

Videotron Ltd., Quebecor’s wholly-owned telecommunications subsidiary, announced the transaction on Thursday, saying it acquired all the shares held by Fibrenoire’s founding owners as well as those of its majority shareholder, private equity fund Novacap TMT.
